Mother of Sharks

Mother of Sharks is a picture book that combines autobiography with magical/fantasy elements. It follows the author, Melissa Cristina Márquez (“Meli”), from her childhood in Puerto Rico, where she loved the ocean and spent time exploring tidal pools, to her life as a marine scientist known for her work with sharks. The story includes a dreamlike underwater adventure with a crab named Jaiba, which introduces the reader to ideas of conservation and the beauty (and mystery) of ocean life.

The narrative aims to dispel myths about sharks, encourage curiosity and compassion for marine ecosystems, and highlight the journey of a girl who becomes a scientist—especially emphasizing representation (Latina, marine biologist).
